A New Chapter for Tampa Bay’s Most Vulnerable Animals: The Mariah and Chris Godwin’s Recovery Initiative at Pet Resource Center
On May 5, 2026, the Mariah and Chris Godwin Recovery Initiative officially launched at Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center, marking a meaningful step forward for animal welfare in Tampa Bay. Surrounded by shelter staff and community supporters, Mariah and Chris Godwin celebrated a program designed to change outcomes for the dogs who need it most.
Bridging the Gap for Animals Who Need It Most
Many shelter animals arrive with medical needs beyond what county resources can cover (i.e. advanced diagnostics, specialized surgeries, or long-term treatment for chronic conditions). Too often, these cases become cost-prohibitive.
The Godwin Family is here to change that.
By underwriting this level of care at Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center, the initiative ensures that dogs with complex medical needs are no longer left behind. They receive the treatment they need to stabilize, heal, and (most importantly) become ready for adoption.
"When we learned how some of the dogs coming into Pet Resource Center couldn't get the care they needed simply because the resources weren't there, we knew we had to do something. These aren't lost causes. They're dogs who just need someone to invest in them. That's what this initiative is about. Bridging that gap so that no dog's outcome is determined by a budget line. We believe in second chances." – Mariah and Chris Godwin, Co-Founders, Team Godwin Foundation
Breaking the Cycle
The impact of untreated medical conditions goes beyond the physical. Dogs with unresolved health issues often face extended shelter stays, and the longer a dog remains in a shelter environment, the more their health, both physical and emotional, can decline. It becomes a difficult cycle: Medical needs delay adoption, and delayed adoption worsens medical outcomes.
This initiative directly disrupts that cycle by providing timely care, reducing length of stay, and improving outcomes so more dogs can find permanent homes.
What This Means for Tampa Bay
As one of the region’s largest shelters, Pet Resource Center serves a high volume of animals. This initiative not only helps individual dogs, but it strengthens the entire system, allowing staff to focus on long-term outcomes rather than resource-driven limitations.
For Mariah and Chris, this work reflects the core of the Team Godwin Foundation: Advocating for vulnerable animals and ensuring every dog has a chance, regardless of medical complexity.
